Myanmar, officially Union Of Myanmar, also called Burma,
Burmese Myanmar, or Pyidaungzu Myanmar Naingngandaw, is a
country lying along the eastern coasts of the Bay of Bengal
and the Andaman Sea in southeast Asia.
The country is about 1,275 miles (2,050 km) long from north
to south--including its 400-mile (640-kilometre) strip along
the Malay Peninsula--and about 580 miles (935 km) from east
to west at its widest extent. Myanmar is bordered on the
southeast by Thailand and Laos, on the northeast by China,
and on the northwest by Bangladesh and the Indian states of
Arunachal Pradesh, Nagaland, Manipur, and Mizoram. Its
coastline, on the south and southwest, borders the Bay of
Bengal, the Gulf of Martaban, and the Andaman Sea. The
capital is Yangôn (Rangoon). Area 261,228 square miles
(676,577 square km). Pop. (1993 est.) 44,613,000.
Myanmar is situated in Southeast Asia and is bordered on the
north and northeast by China, on the east and Southeast by
Laos and Thailand, on the south by Andaman Sea and the Bay
of Bengal and on the west by Bangladesh and India. It is
located between latitudes 09 32 N and 28 31 N and longitudes
92 10 E and 101 11 E.
The Union of Myanmar is made up of 135 national races, of
which the main national races are Kachin, Kayah, Kayin,
Chin, Bamar, Mon, Rakhine and Shan. Population of the
country is nearly 60 million.
The national language of Myanmar is Burmese, of which there
are over 80 different dialects spoken. The written language
uses an amazing looking script based on ancient Indian
characters. In the cities many of the older generation still
speak very good English and it is also becoming popular
again with the younger generation.
It has normally three Seasons; summer (March to May,
temperature: 29-45.c), Rainy Season (June to October,
temperature: 22-40.c) and Winter (November to February:
19-29.c) and mountains of Northern parts are capped with
snow in the winter season.
The main religions of the country are Buddhism (89.2%),
Christianity(5.0%), Islam(3.8%), Hinduism(0.5%),
Spiritualism(1.2%) and others(0.2%). Religious intolerance
or discrimination on grounds of religion is nonexistent in
the Union of Myanmar throughout its long history.
